Masterclass: The Future of the African art ecosystem(s)

calendar
Thu Aug 27, 17:30 - Thu Aug 27, 19:00

About

The African art ecosystem has evolved exponentially over the last decade, but it is in its nascence. Current conditions have made some bricks and mortar platforms vulnerable, while newcomers are entering the digital sphere.?

The most immediate impact of Covid-19 has been the virtual 'migration' of live events, dealing and collecting. In this second, revised edition of this masterclass, Mary Corrigall, the prominent South African art critic, writer, art historian, will drill deeper into the impact of the online-turn in the commercial sectors of the ecosystem.

New statistics will be presented to further flesh out this shifting future that lies ahead.

Sharing their experiences and insights into the current state of the African art market, interviews with the following leaders will feature;

Lucy MacGarry - co-founder Latitudes, art fair and online platforms for African contemporary art.

Touria El Glaoui - the founding director of the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, which takes place in London, New York and Marrakech.

Christophe Person - head of Contemporary African art at Piasa, the French auction house and independent curator.

Delphine Lopez - director Cecile Fakhoury gallery, Dakar, Abidjan, Paris.

Baylon Sandri - director Smac gallery, Cape Town, Joburg and Stellenbosch.

Drawing from Contemporary African Ecology: A Decade of Curating, the masterclass will begin with an overview of the forces that have thus far shaped, driven and distorted the structure of the African art ecosystem(s) with reference to different art capitals on the continent.

The 2 hour masterclass will conclude with plotting future developments and directions that the African art market may take as the global market shifts to compensate for the fall-out of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This masterclass will be delivered in a webinar format on Zoom. Places are limited so that there is time to answer questions and to have a discussion at the end.

PDF Combo: There is a special price for those who wish to also purchase a PDF copy of the landmark Contemporary African Ecology: A Decade of Curating   which offers the historical perspective and forms the basis for this masterclass.
