Victory Gardens!

About

Four people responded to a call for action on June 16 2020 (Youth Day in South Africa). None knew what to expect but we all knew we were committed to shaking things up - to “being the change.” We spoke of many things, we spoke of places, methods, privilege and where we come from - but most of all we spoke about where we were going and how we envision the future.

From this meeting, the Imbewu SEED (Socio- Economic Education and Development) Community was born.

Our Goal

iSEED is a community based movement creating what we affectionately call "Victory Gardens" in as many places as we can by using the resources that we have at our fingertips to drive the change that we know is possible. We believe that food security is the cornerstone to creating the future we dream of. The eventual aim is to grow these gardens into co-operative communities.

The How

We have partnered with some folks in Masiphumelele for the pilot project - a network of people we know through various projects over the years that learned  of iSEED and decided they were keen to throw their energy into it.

We have broken ground on our first site in Masiphumelele, a servitude space next to a productive factory.

We've cleared out the space and chopped the trees that we cleared into firewood which we are selling per bag, with all funds going back into the garden.

We aim to be ready to plant by the last week of August and have two other plots of land available to us to use for the next phases.

We're composting! We're planting! We're building a community! And you can assist in SO many ways!

How can you help?

We have loads of options:

  • Sponsoring towards lunch for one of our workdays
  • Sponsoring seeds and/or seedlings
  • Sponsoring soil and/or compost
  • Sponsoring building resources
  • Sponsoring transport
  • Sponsoring towards our irrigation system
  • Or just by making a donation!

Please also get in touch if you have any resources to donate directly (irrigation, black plastic, timber, etc.), or if you would like to join us in co-creating the space - [email protected]

You can help us build the future.
