On 23 August at 17:00 Lieva Starker will be doing a farewell/ fundraising violin recital at St Cyprian’s School for Girls, Cape Town. Tertia Visser-Downie will be joining her for a zinger of a programme that begins with Bach, meanders through a very rare and unknown Beethoven’s 10th violin sonata, contemplates Cuban beauties in Saint-Saëns’s ‘Havanaise’, laments lost love with Gluck’s ‘Melodie’ and then turns homeward to Hofmeyr and a very exciting work by van Dijk.
 
Lieva has just returned from her first South African concert tour. After a year studying abroad in the United Kingdom, she returned home where performed in venues in Plett, Knysna, Joahnnesburg nd Pretoria with Anneke Lamont.
 
Having been awarded a generous tuition scholarship, she is currently studying violin performance with the renowned Jan Repko and Jiafeng Chen at Birmingham Conservatoire. Lieva has won various prizes at some of South Africa's most prestigious competitions and has performed as soloist with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.
 
Lieva has also enjoyed concerts in the United Kingdom that included a performance in one of Birmingham Conservatoire’s flagship concert series - the Beethoven Marathon.
 
Tertia Visser-Downie is an accomplished South African pianist who studied under national and international piano masters John Antoniadis, and London-based Martino Tirimo after winning the prestigious Mabel Quick Scholarship.
 
Performing numerous solo recitals in South Africa and internationally, Tertia has featured with various orchestras and appeared at events such as the Cape Town Pops Series with the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra, playing Rachmaninov and Gershwin. Tertia regularly gets invited as an official accompanist at national music competitions and regularly accompanies talented and award winning musicians at various events and concerts.
 
Tertia has produced a number of her own CDs as well as establishing and managing her ‘Tots in Tune’ program designed to introduce classical music to young toddlers. She also released a CD with well-known cellist Marian Lewin at the end of 2009. She is a part time lecturer in piano at the South African College of Music in Cape Town.
