Kim Kallie Performance Academy & Penny Lane Studios present YOUNG LEGENDS: an evening of entertainment and enjoyment for young performers and their supporters!


Our theme “YOUNG LEGENDS” is inspired by entertainment legends, who have persevered, endured, fought and become giants within their industries. This is our wish for our young legends at the Academy.


Time: Thurs 9 July, 7:00pm – 8:15pm

Musicians: Johan Laas (keyboard), Ariella Caira (cello), Nicholas Ford (bass), Darren Pieterson (drums).


KKPA holds twice annual Showcases in order to develop students' live performance skills, with items selected to challenge and develop their technical abilities, range, and genre. Working together with Johan Laas, Kim uses her considerable experience as a performer, artist and songwriter, to identify, nurture and develop talent in aspiring performers.

Aerin van den Bergh
Aerin is 16 years old, and homeschooled in Cape Town. She loves all forms of art and music, has classical voice training and recently passed her Grade 6 Trinity exams with distinction. She has recorded and released 2 tracks, and featured on a compilation album in 2018. She was also lead singer for a South African band which performed and toured Sweden in 2018. This is her first Showcase.

Caprese Katz
Caprese is in Grade 5 at Sweet Valley Primary School. She is a motivated, kind and passionate young lady who excels in academics, tennis and netball. She has a pet chameleon and a hamster named Mouse! Caprese loves drama and plays the piano, and is learning to develop her performance confidence. This will be her first Showcase.

Carla Bernal
Carla has been with KKPA since inception in 2014 and has participated in every Showcase since. Carla performed with Divas for the “Divas Unite” Women’s day concert at the Grand West Arena, plus a number of school performances, both playing the piano and singing.

Daniella Jähnig
Daniella has performed in various choirs and stage productions over the years, with a versatile vocal range from alto to soprano. Daniella plays the violin, guitar, ukulele and keyboard. She is active in drama, ice skating, horse riding, fencing and in International Science fairs in 2020/2021. This is Daniella’s showcase debut.

Gemma Schwendinger
Gemma enjoys singing and plays the piano. She is the lead singer in her school rock band. This is Gemma’s fourth KKPA Showcase.

Jessica Diggle
Jess is in Grade 11 at Reddam High School Constantia. Jess has been with KKPA for 3 years. She has demo'd many songs for Colin Sher at Cosher recording studio. Jess was the lead in 'Noises off' playing the part of Brooke. She was also the lead in Matilda when at Londons 'Knightsbrdge School' where she walked the boards at the Royal Court Theatre in Sloane Square.

Kristi Lowe
Kristi has been performing since she was 15, at which age she produced her first single "I need more time" with SA band Goodluck.  Since then Kristi has performed at a number of high-level charity, sports and awards events, as well as opening at the 2018 World Symposium on Pulmonary Hypertension in Nice, France.  This is her seventh Showcase. Kristi has just written and released her first single called 'Take Me Away,' a poignant ballad which is now available on all digital platforms.

Lebo Borole
Lebo Borole is a professional singer and actress appearing in shows such as The Lion King playing the lead role of Nala. After graduating from Wits with a degree in dramatic arts in 2012; she went onto do The Color Purple, Lion and the Lamb, playing lead alongside John Kani. She recently got the opportunity to work with Kim Kallie of Kim Kallie Performance Academy who was Lebo's vocal coach in preparation for another season of The Color Purple 2020.

Lia Schwendinger
Lia loves to sing and is currently preparing for her Grade 8 Trinity piano exam. She has performed at numerous events as opening act with Ard Matthews, Freshly Ground and Goodluck. Lia has been accepted to study a joint honors degree in Popular Music Performance (Vocals) and Songwriting in London, and is currently working at Stardust. This is Lia’s sixth Showcase.

Rania Ahmed
Rania joined KKPA in 2019, and with Kim and Johan's nurturing teaching style has since soared in confidence. She immerses herself with private singing and is working towards her vocal exams later this year. Rania is a member of Reddam House' Vocal Ensemble, and will be touring Europe with the group in June. This is her 2nd Showcase.

I live and work in London at a Property company but LOVE to sing. I was drawn to this city for the West End! From a young age all I ever wanted was to be on a stage. I have performed in many am dram productions and a few professional ones as well with my mum, Kim Kallie and my grandmother, Judy Page. I am so grateful that this lockdown has meant online singing lessons and the chance to perform in my hometown, from afar!

Scot Jordaan
Scot’s passion for music and especially singing started at the young age of five. He first experimented with keyboard and then moved to piano, and has recently discovered electric guitar as his true love. Scot joined the Academy in 2018 and this is his fourth Showcase.

Stephan Thaele
Stephan Oliver Thaele, a medical doctor by profession, has only recently started training with KKPA. He comes from a musical family and having played double base in his earlier years, has now followed his passion for singing. It took the news of him becoming a dad, little girl due in July 2020, for him to take up formal training.

 

ABOUT KIM KALLIE

  • At 8 Years of age, recorded ‘Montreal’ with my mother Judy Page.
  • After matriculating - began as a frontline singer for numerous band in the Rock, Jazz and contemporary genres, under the leadership of Jahan Laas (MD of Idols) and Pete Smith.
  • 1982 - Played the ‘Mistress’ in ‘Evita’ at the State Theatre - the start of a career on stage.
  • 1983 - Played the ‘Narrator’ in’Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat’ at the Civic Theatre, JHB.
  • 1984 -  Recored as ’Margino’ for the first time.Sell out performances,all over SA, and within 6 months this led to a Platinum status.
  • 1985 - Hosted my own TV show - ‘A Portrait of Kim Kallie’.
  • 1984 - 1994 - My mainstay was Jingle singing in JHB.
  • 1986 - Co-Presented with Nick Taylor an educational children’s programme called ‘Harry’s House’, there were 3 series recorded. 
  • 1986 - Performed as the lead in many industrial theatrical and car launches all over SA.
  • 1986 -  Performed with Judy Page in ‘From Taubie with Love’, directed by Taubie Kushlick.
  • 1987 - Co-wrote and performed in ‘Circle of Love’ with Judy Page.
  • 1996 - Performed ‘Tell me on a Sunday’, - a one woman show by Andrew Lloyd Webber, - a sell out at Spier.
  • 1998 - Played Eva Peron in ‘Evita’ in Cape Town.
  • 1995 - 2005 - Lived in the UK.
  • 2007 - Returned to the stage to perform in ‘Menopause’ for Pieter Toerin.
  • 2011 - to date, The Performance coach for ‘Topstars’ an inhouse vocal competition for Shoprite Checkers.
  • 2013 - Co-Wrote and Co-Produced ‘Mom & Me’ with Judy Page (My Mom), Sarah-Paige (My daughter) and Johan Laas (My Friend) as the musical director.
  • 2014 -  Co-Wrote with ‘Goodluck’ the song ‘I need more time’, second most downloaded song on SA iTunes for 2 weeks.
  • 2014 - Co-wrote, updated and performed in ‘Mom & Me’ at Del Aire Graff.
  • 2014 - Sang with Ard Matthews on ‘Chefs who Share’ at Cape Town City Hall.
  • 2014 - Sang with The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by John Walton.
  • Currently and for the last 5 years, I have run my own Performance Academy from my studio.

Johan Laas: Pianist and Music Director

Music captivated Johan from a very early stage in his life, as he started playing the piano at the age of 3. He joined his father’s band at the age of 15, and his love for music continued to grow. In the 70’s when it was still compulsory for young school-leaving men to join the South African Defense Force, Johan joined the Entertainment Group and toured around the country for three years with a 5-piece pop/rock band entertaining the troops.

Johan's love for all genres of music took him on a journey, producing albums for local and international artists, composing and arranging variety TV shows, numerous extravaganzas, movie scores, radio station identity music, radio commercials and live concerts from 5-piece bands to full orchestras.

 International projects that he arranged and produced took him to France, Los Angeles, Atlantic City, Belgium and Italy. Johan had 9 Artes Award nominations of which he won one. He also won the M-Net Movie Award for the best movie score in Africa.

 Locally Johan has worked with, among others, Soweto String Quartet, The Afro Tenors, Bruce Cassidy, Judy Page, Kim Kallie, Steve Hofmeyr, The Parlotones and Vodacom’s “Yebo Gogo”, Michael de Pinna.

Johan joined the “Idols” team right from the start as Musical Director in 2002. He completed 8 seasons in South Africa as well as two in West Africa and East Africa.

Ariella Caira: Cello
Ariella has been playing music since the age of 5. Although originally focused on classical piano and percussion studies, cello has always been Ariella’s true passion; mellow, warm and deeply expressive.

Ariella has a BA Hons degree in Theatre and Performance (2008, University of Cape Town), with distinction in Drama and First Prize for English Acting. She has performed with numerous ensembles and several orchestras, and as session musician, she has recorded for well-known producers, projects and artists including Good Luck, Jeremy Loops, Hot Water, Stelth Ulvang, Alice Phoebe Lou, and Markus Wormstorm.

Nick Ford: Bass Guitar
Nicholas Ford is an aspiring 17 year old musician from Cape Town. He has been playing music since a young age, starting with piano and progressing to drums and bass later on. He plays regular gigs with various school bands at Rondebosch Boys High as well as with his dad, and loves to perform. This is his 6th showcase as part of the band.
