VWS Run / Ride Your Hood - Lockdown 2020

Mon May 11, 06:00 - Sun May 31, 20:00

Event is online

ABOUT

The all-new VWS Run/Ride Your Hood is kicking off this May (now with the recently added Bark Your Hood)! Yes the mountain trails have been sorely missed during the lockdown but the VWS doesn’t want you to miss out on supporting your local volunteer firefighters. Since we can’t take you onto the magnificent and much-missed Table Mountain, you will have the opportunity to pound the pavement around your neighbourhood (keeping within a 5km radius of course) during the month of May. We've added #BarkYourHood due to numerous requests for runners / walkers to enter their favourite 4-legged friends - woof.

Starting on Monday, 11 May, you will have until Sunday 31 May to complete any distance you want, whether it’s a relaxed and easy 5km with the kids (all ages welcome) or a more grueling 100km challenge - it doesn't have to be all in one go. This challenge is open to walkers and runners (and now with furry friends with 'race' numbers in tow). If you prefer cycling, don’t despair, there’s a challenge for you too. Keeping it mellow or going the distance, the choice is yours. Track yourself using a sports watch or a multitude of apps (we have a Strava club set up as well)

Register and join any time from 10 May. You can sign up as late as the last day if you like :)

Teams

  • You can enter a team if you would like and it's a great way to get family and friends 'together' while being apart.
  • Each person needs to enter the run or the ride as an individual and select which distance they want to complete
  • The team total is the addition of all the team members.
  • As a team you will still have individual targets, not a specific team target distance (unless you decide to set one yourself).

=======================================

Organised and run entirely by us, wildland firefighters of the VWS, all proceeds go towards our organisation, an entirely volunteer-run, non-profit entity dedicated to the protection of biodiversity and the preservation of our natural heritage. We receive no official or municipal funding and all funds (raised by our volunteers, via donations or events like this) are used for operational and logistical expenses when fighting devastating wildfires in the Western Cape.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What VWS #RunYourHood and VWS #RideYourHood event?

VWS Run / Ride Your Hood is an event to help keep you motivated, staying / get fit and healthy during lockdown, all the while supporting volunteer firefighters in Cape Town, South Africa. Once you have entered and choosen your distance(s), you can run and / or ride any route you like within the confines of local lockdown rules. You have until 31st May to complete the distance and do not need to do it all at once.

After each running / walking or riding session you just upload the distance and time HERE and we will keep a LEADERBOARD going so you can track your progress and see how you compare to others taking part. You can also join as a team and challenge your family and friends from around the world

How does it all work?

The first step is to enter the event online (on this page). Select if you want to #RunYourHood (you can do this as a walk as well) or #RideYourHood, or do both if you like! Fill in the relevant entry details including the distance you would like to do (remember you don't have to cover the distance all at once - more details below).
  • #RunYourHood - 5 km, 10 km, 21 km, 42 km, 70 km or 100 km
  • #RideYourHood - 25 km, 50 km, 100 km, 200 km, 350 km or 500 km.
Once Entered, you will receive an email within 24 hours with your own personal 'Race Number', and the details on how to log the distances you cover each 'sessions'. We will combine those to track the final distances (also keep track yourself so you know how far you have to do still), and keep an updated Leaderboard including finishers and teams with the most distance.

As this 'event' is support the Volunteer Wildfire Services and our volunteer firefighters any extra donations to our cause would be amazing :)

Can I do the race over many days / sessions?

Yes, you can take as long as you like and break it up however you choose, as long as you complete it before midnight on 31st May 2020 (you could even start on that day and do it all in one 'event'). You could do it all at once, you could do a little bit each day be that during an allowable outside 'exercsice period', around the garden at any time or even on a treadmill or stationary bike. How you do it is up to you - all you need to do is submit your kilometres covered for each 'session' when you have completed that sessions.

Do I have to run or ride?

No, you can sign up for the Run Your Hood and do it as a walk, crawl, shuffle, with the family dog, or on a treadmill at home - anything but on a bicycle / stationary bike. For Ride Your Hood you can use a normal bike or a stationary bike at home.

Do I have to be in Cape Town to take part?

Of course not, we would LOVE participants from all over the world to take part - the more the merrier all supporting volunteer firefighters. Share the event with family and friends world over, make family teams with distant relatives, get your long-lost work colleagues together and get involved and run 'together' (in a social distant and responsible manner obviously - it's a team in spirit, not a team on the road)

Please just obey your local Lockdown rules in your city / country. We trust everyone to be responsible.

Is there an age limit?

Nope, all age welcome to take part in this event. In fact we are hoping to source prizes for the oldest and youngest runners / riders

How do I track the distance I cover?

You can use any tracking device (e.g. Fitbit, Garmin watch etc) or phone app that can track you (e.g. Strava - there is a Strava Club HERE) as long as you are able to submit your results at the end of each session on the Live Runner / Rider Updates page. If you are using a treadmile or cycle machine, the read outs from that are fine. As this is a fun event, we are trusting you not to cheat and you will not need to post proof, just the distances (and times if you like).

If you are running laps of your house and don't have a tracking device, estimate the lap distance and count the number of laps you do to get the distance covered.

How do the teams work?

Teams are there so you can get a group together, be it far-flung family across the globe, or friends in the next suburb you can't see due to lockdown rules. It's a way to 'get together' while still obeying the lockdown rules.
  • Each person needs to enter the run or the ride as an individual and select which distance they want to complete
  • The team total distance and time is the addition of all the team members.
  • As a team you will still have individual targets, not a specific team target distance (unless you decide to set one yourself)
You can challenge other families, or friends groups to see who can do the most in the 21 days.
