Diamond in the rough
Kalahari Oryx, a rare South African gem, stretches over 212 000 acres in the Northern Cape Province of this diverse country. The reserve is situated within the Kalahari Desert which is an ancient, arid biome expanding north of the Gariep River to as far north as southern Angola and stretching from the coast in the west to midway through the southern sub continent. The sand dunes, shaped over centuries by the prevailing winds, create shallow valleys providing refuge for the denizens of this arid environment. Everything here has adapted. The dominant vegetation, grasses, thorny shrubs and Acacia trees, can survive long drought periods of more than ten months every year. Amidst this beautiful desert environment lies a hidden oasis for the most discerning visitor.
Oasis of luxury
The name of the desert, Kalahari, means “large thirst” in Tswana language. However, in contrast to this, Kalahari Oryx will ensure that its private lodges are every guest’s oasis and place of relaxation. The luxury main lodge boasts with four double en-suite rooms overlooking the beautiful landscape. Each room is equipped with aircon, fireplace, shower and bath as well as it’s own private veranda from where one can stare into the distance of the vast
landscape that surrounds one. The lodge is further finished with a bar, kitchen, dining and lounge area that opens up to the private swimming pool. The in-house chef prepares delicious traditional three course meals that are complimented by either a local refreshing white wine or a well-rounded red wine. Special desert sundowners in the dunes are furthermore a great specialty offered by our friendly staff. This is truly a place to relax, reflect and restore one’s wellness.
Conservation is key
Kalahari Oryx is proud to have the best managers and skilled staff on board that not only help to steer the reserve to great success but also to contribute passionately to the sustainability of this natural environment. Our knowledgeable team devotes their time and effort into conserving the Kalahari’s indigenous fauna and flora, making Kalahari Oryx an important conservational role player in Southern Africa. We have invested in various wildlife projects including the reintroduction and protection of wild Kalahari lions and Desert black rhino of which we are very proud. Our team works closely with provincial and national conservational bodies, vets, wildlife researchers and private reserves to conserve these very special subspecies for future generations.
African Time
Kalahari Oryx is a place where one’s soul can connect with nature. Bush wanders, game drives and sundowners with friends let you enjoy the splendour without keeping track of time.
“Nothing but breathing the air of Africa, and actually walking through it, can communicate the indescribable sensations.” - William Burchell (English explorer)
