Saving lives with the IoT
Paul Mesarick explains how he and his team use the Internet of Things to save lives in informal settlements across South Africa.

Lumkani aims to use technology based early warning systems to increase the safety and security of people living in informal settlements, in addition to expanding their social impact. Lumkani is a social enterprise tackling the challenge of shack/slum fires in South Africas urban informal settlements with a view to expanding across the globe.
Paul is an Electrical Engineer and social entrepreneur. He is a director of tech company Lumkani.

On the edge of reality: The making of an Immersive Gulf Stream
Cape Town based design firm Formula D interactive has designed a simulated interactive underwater experience for Frost Science Museum in Miami, Florida. This 18m wall is not your regular VR experience, but ratherdifferent spin on virtual reality used to highlight the effect of the marine life in the Gulf Stream. In his talk, Michael will share notes on concepts, design process and technology involved.

More about Formula-D and your speaker Michael Wolf
Michael Wolf is a German designer who moved to Cape Town in 2002. In 2007 he founded Formula D interactive, an award winning design consultancy.Using the cutting edge of multimedia technology, Formula-D specialize in the design of interactive experiences for museums, visitor centres and classrooms that stand out.

After studying at Cologne International School of Design [KISD] and École Nationale
Superieure de Création Industriélle [ENSCI], Paris, he joined MARS – Exploratory Media Lab
at Fraunhofer Institute of Technology. Here he experimented with human-computer interaction, focussed on immersive media spaces and tangible interfaces for computer-enhanced learning.

Wolf has received several awards including the prestigious IF Design Award. He is cofounder of the Cape Town Design Network and leader of IxDA Cape Town, the local chapter of the Interaction Design Association.

Oculus Rift Demo by Sense Virtual

The Oculus Rift has capitvated the world with its promise of accessible, affordable virtual reality. In 2014 Facebook bought Oculus for 2 billion USD, further highlighting the importance of their work and the possiblities of such a device.

Sense Virtual will demo these headsets and allow you, the public, to try them out. Don't miss out on this opportunity, as the Rift is not yet availible to the end user.
