Bac(h) from Birmingham, Pretoria: Lieva Starker and Anneke Lamont in Concert

Sun Aug 2, 16:00 - Sun Aug 2, 18:00

Dr. Miriam Makeba Hall

ABOUT

On 2 August at 16:00, Lieva Starker and Anneke Lamont will present a concert at the Dr Miriam Makeba Hall, Unisa. The concert, generously made possible by Concerts SA, will be a reflection on Starker’s recent time studying abroad. She will present a combination of European works she focused on in her studies and South African works that kept her grounded in the South African soundscape.

The concert will include works by Bach, Beethoven and Saint-Saëns. Works by South African composers Hendrik Hofmyer, Clare Loveday and Péter Louis van Dijk will also be presented.

Starker has just returned from her first year studying abroad in the United Kingdom. Having been awarded a generous tuition scholarship, she is currently studying violin performance with the renowned Jan Repko and Jiafeng Chen at Birmingham Conservatoire. Starker has won various prizes at some of South Africa's most prestigious competitions and has performed as soloist with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. Starker has also enjoyed concerts in the United Kingdom that included a performance in one of Birmingham Conservatoire’s flagship concert series - the Beethoven Marathon.

Lamont requires little introduction in South Africa and is easily one of our country’s foremost pianists. After completing her studies in Hanover, Germany, Lamont returned to South Africa as a collaborator with some of the country’s greatest soloist, producing many recordings under the Salon Music label. She has also served as an official accompanist for various national competitions and also serves as a juror at both national and international competitions. Lamont regularly performs at festivals in Grahamstown, Franschhoek and Potchefstroom and has conducted two national tours with acclaimed cellists, Alexander Ivashkin and Gary Hoffman.

The concert in Pretoria is the final stop of a concert tour that will travel from Knysna, through Plettenberg Bay to Gauteng, where the duo will also present a concert in Johannesburg on 1 August at Tinsel Gallery in Risidale.
