Lievland Wine Estate

ABOUT

On the 19 April we will be holding our annual Fire & Fynbos Awareness Day at the beautiful Lievland Wine Estate near Stellenbosch.  Once again our organizing team (all volunteers) are preparing for an exciting day out for the whole family…from toddlers to grandparents!  With non-stop fun activities for the children as they learn about fire and firefighting - Fire Truck rides, Tree Climbing and Swings, Snake Shows, Treasure Hunts, mock Firefighting Displays and interesting exhibitions.  Our volunteers and Friends of VWS Jonkershoek provide a bustling food court and tea garden satisfy your hunger or sweet tooth.

Race for Water!
One of the main objectives of Volunteer Wildfire Services, and a key focus of our Awareness Day, is the protection and preservation of the Western Cape’s fresh water supply.  The backbone of this system is the remote mountain water catchment areas, and the diverse Fynbos ecosystem that is critical in managing the run-off for a sustainable water supply.  This life giving resource is under serious threat each fire season, as wildfires are increasing in frequency and intensity… battering this delicate system.

Our volunteer firefighting crews are despatched throughout the fire season to form part of the human barrier that stands between the devastating fires and our incredible natural resources.  Each fire season we are in a Race for Water! as we make our way into the remote mountain areas to assist CapeNature in stopping the wildfires as quickly as possible.  Our men and women are dedicated and driven, spending countless hours in extreme heat and difficult terrain to achieve our goals… and we NEED your support!

Our challenge to you – put on your trail shoes and join our men and women in their Race for Water!, by participating in either the Fireman’s Revenge Trail Run or our Beat the Heat Fun Run.  100% of all proceeds go directly to VWS Firefighting Operations, which provides firefighting resources to CapeNature on a voluntary, not paid, basis.  VWS relies entirely on sponsorship and fund-raising initiatives to be able to operate.  These much needed funds are put 100% into VWS running costs, from training and equipping our members and providing them with safe transport to and from the fire line.

Fireman’s Revenge 14km Trail Run offers some incredible 360-degree mountain views and quality climbs, making the route unforgettable. While the Beat the Heat 5km is for the runner or walker looking for a more relaxed meander among the vines, with spectacular scenery to make it worthwhile!

Both routes wind through vineyards and the beautiful Simonsberg Conservancy, taking in stunning views as you crisscross through Lievland, Kanonkop, Uitkyk and Wiesenhof.  Running along the slopes of Simonsberg you may even get to spot some of the Wildebeest and other wild animals!  The smell of pancakes and coffee will have you sprinting to the finish line, right in the centre of all the action

Come join us on the day and help us save our beautiful environment, incredible biodiversity and precious mountain water catchment areas.
