Classes will be presented by industry insiders from the #BlackGirlNetwork. Don't miss this great opportunity to learn, notch up your skills and make great professional and social contacts in the digital media industry.

Programme (each class 45 minutes)

Class 1: Digital Writing 101 by Phiona Okumu (Editor: Afripop Magazine, Content+PR Director Social Media Week JHB, By-lines Guardian, Vogue UK, MTV Iggy)
o   Writing basics
o   Writing for the digital space
o   Using social media to complement your writing
o   Using images to tell a story 

Class 2: Writing for a niche audience by Kay Selisho (Digital Editor: LiveMagZA)
o   Defining and selecting your niche audience
o   Choosing topics for your audience
o   Feedback from your audience
o   Creating a sense of community around your audience throught the ‘offline space’ e.g. events

Class 3: Getting the Gig by Ntombenhle Shezi (Assistant fashion writer: Elle Magazine, former Arts Content Coordinator: British Council South Africa)
o   Building the skills and experience for your CV
o   Networking and marketing yourself
o   Freelancing
o   Part-time work
o   Landing and maintaining a permanent job

Class 4: The business of digital media by Panashe Chigumadzi (Editor and Founder: Vanguard Magazine, former Columnist and Contributor: Forbes Woman Africa, Forbes Africa)
o   Establishing your own platform
o   Building the attention
o   Monetizing the attention 

Practical Exercise

There will be a practical exercise at the end of the Masterclass where participants will submit a 500 - 800 word essay in one or more of the following categories: Culture, Opinion, Article or Fashion. The best  in each category will be published in both Vanguard and Afripop magazines.
