As is customary, the HORRORFEST presents a classic silent film with a live, original soundtrack performed to the screen.
On Halloween night, Robert Wiene’s legendary German Expressionist film THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI (1919) will loom on the big screen to a live soundtrack performed by THE MAKABRA ENSEMBLE (consisting of members from TERMINATRYX & V.O.D - Sonja Ruppersberg & Paul Blom, LARK & MR. SAKITUMI - Sean Ou Tim & Simon Ratcliffe, and Matthijs Van Dijk).
The film follows the tale of a magician at a fair who has a somnambulist (sleepwalker), who can predict the future. When a man asks when he’ll die, the prediction is, “by dawn” – and it happens! This leads to further mayhem and panic. With an incredibly effective and graphic angular expressionistic style in the set design, this piece of cinema history is still something to behold – and here further enhanced with the live soundtrack from the musicians beneath the screen (utilising a wide range of instruments, voice and effects, breathing new life into the already groundbreaking movie).
While viewers are encouraged to dress up as their favourite monsters (or any ghoulish, freaky costumes & make-up) throughout the HorrorFest, this Halloween night screening is where the best dressed winner will be selected.
