ABOUT

DESIGN VISIONS FOR AFRICAN CITIES OF THE FUTURE’

Presented by World Design Capital Cape Town 2014 and Luyanda Mpahlwa DesignSpaceAfrica.

A CPD validated event supported by the Cape Institute for Architecture

This Design Africa Symposium has been inspired by the hosting of two significant design events in South Africa: World Design Capital Cape Town 2014 and the International Union of Architects World Congress, UIA 2014 in Durban. The Symposium, hosted at the Brundyn+ Gallery on Monday 11 August, will take the form of conversations with international and local voices on the contemporary condition of African cities. This forms the key event for the WDC 2014 line-up of Architecture August events.

The objective is to analyse the urban development challenges facing African cities and to map out possible visions to re-shape African city environments into the future. The Symposium seeks to investigate how design creativity could influence development strategies and enable African cities to disentangle themselves from colonial and post-modern concepts of development. The focus will be on the urban scale of African cities rather than individual design interventions.

Discussions will evolve around the following themes:
  • The condition of African cities
  • Opportunities for urban transformation
  • Education & knowledge production
  • Design as a catalyst for social integration

A robust line-up of design practitioners from across the African continent and diaspora will bring practical examples of African cities as points of discussion. The intention is to encourage open, multi-faceted and robust debate among speakers and participants from diverse sectors and disciplines.

Confirmed speakers include Angela Mingas (Angola), Joe Addo (Ghana), Sithabile Mathe (Botswana), Ephim Schluger (Brazil) and – from South Africa – Edgar Pieterse, Iain Louw, Rashiq Fataar, Henri Comri, Ruben Reddy, Derek Henstra, Simone le Grange and Luyanda Mpahlwa.

The symposium provides a participatory platform to map out a vision for an inclusive urban future for African cities: a vision that could be implemented over a long term period, and create a lasting legacy of both WDC Cape Town 2014 and Durban UIA 2014.

The Symposium will be recorded and documented to allow access and engagement with the outcomes by relevant professionals, institutions and policy makers in future.

Participation in the event, including refreshments, costs R100 for professionals and R50 for students.
