NWU Research Conversation series: Research Data - New Opportunities in the Digital Age

Thu Apr 20, 11:00 - Thu Apr 20, 13:00

Event is online

ABOUT

During this 2-hour NWU Research Conversation Session Michelle Willmers and Thomas King (both from the Centre for Innovation in Learning & Teaching, UCT) will share their experience in terms of opportunities that are arising as more datasets are becoming available in digital format, how to share data legally, ethically, and responsibily, and what the positive impact of data sharing is for researchers and research projects.

Michelle Willmers and Thomas King are the Curation and Dissemination team of the Global South Research on Open Educational Resources for Development (ROER4D) project. They are both avid Open Science enthusiasts and can share their experience in terms of developing research proposals with openness in mind - including ethics applications, consent forms, and more.  They will also discuss:
  • the preparation of raw research data for sharing;
  • various terminologies such as privacy, confidentiality, and anonymity;
  • the impact of clauses like "we will destroy data after the research project" and "not for commercial use" on data curation and potential future publication and sharing; and
  • the potential positive impact of sharing data vs the potential of being scooped before publishing.
Much work is being done around the world to understand the topics that will be discussed in the session and we welcome participants to bring their own questions and experiences to this interactive session.

We invite all NWU researchers, students, and support staff to this opportunity to start an open conversation about actively engaging in Open Science in an informed way.
