THE GRANDDADDY OF SWING DANCES
The lindy hop, known as the granddaddy of swing dances, developed alongside the swinging big band jazz sounds of the 1920s-40s, and spread from the African American communities in Harlem, New York, throughout America and further afield in the hey-day of the Swing Era. It is a vibrant social dance, encouraging improvisation, musicality and fun. The music has its roots in African rhythms, and came full circle to South Africa in the 1930s, with Sophiatown becoming known as Little Harlem for its Savoy-style music and dancing. A thriving lindy hop scene has been growing in Cape Town since 2012.
