Midlands Chamber Choir: Singet dem Herrn ~ Wartburg OLD

Sun May 28, 15:00 - Sun May 28, 16:00

Wartburg Lutheran Church

ABOUT

The Midlands Chamber Choir would like to celebrate the motets of Johann Sebastian Bach in a performance of three of his six motets: Singet dem Herrn (Sing to the Lord), Komm, Jesu komm (Come, Jesus come), and Jesu meine Freude (Jesus my joy). This hour long afternoon performance in the beautiful Wartburg Lutheran Church promise to be a special experience to all, and is bound to linger in your thoughts in the week thereafter. Children and Scholars are able to come for free, so bring your young musicians to their first 'Bach-experience'. The choir will be conducted by Jaco Dippenaar, accompanied by instrumentalists from the KZNPO, and feature soloists from the choir.

Interesting facts:
* A motet has three characteristics: It is 1) choral music which includes imitative passages; 2) usually use biblical texts; and 3) is set for voices with a basso continuo (organ/ cello/ harpsichord), although its performance allows for orchestral instruments to double the vocal parts.
* Bach’s motets are the only category of his vocal works which continued in an unbroken tradition of performances until the present time, although the function of these motets changed from occasional sacred music under Bach’s direction.
* Experts believe that Bach had composed these double-choir motets as practice pieces for his Thomaner Choir so that they could at least hit the notes with certainty and become choral singers who could sing faultlessly with good intonation.
