ABOUT

Awarded an MBE for Services to Music in 2015, Michael Collins is considered one of the greatest exponents of the clarinet in the world today. An icon of British classical music, Collins won the woodwind prize in the first BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition at age 16, going on to make his US debut at New York’s Carnegie Hall at the age of 22. With a residency at the Wigmore Hall, he enjoys a glittering career as soloist, conductor and recording artist with many of the world’s most significant orchestras. Collins also has the distinction of being the most frequently invited wind soloist to the BBC Proms, including several appearances at the renowned Last Night of the Proms.

In this rare performance with Stellenbosch uber-accompanist Luis Magalhaes, Michael Collins performs the best works for the clarinet repertoire: the Schumann Fantasy Pieces, Brahms' Sonata No 2, Gerald Finzi's Five Bagatelles, Witold Lutoslawki's Dance Preludes and Francis Poulenc's Sonata.
