ABOUT
iPhupho L’ka Biko is an Afrikanist band of Azania, based in Johannesburg. The collective was
formed in 2015 by bassist and composer Nhlanhla Ngqaqu who was born in Kagiso, but
rooted in the Eastern Cape. The band members met in Braamfontein where they often
interacted through school ensembles, jam sessions and at circular live music spaces. iPhupho
refers to God the giver and fulfiller of dreams, and Biko speaks to black consciousness. The
band therefore seeks to spiritually awaken and to conscientize the masses through music.
iPhupho is inspired by the legendary Busi Mhlongo, Miriam Makeba, Nina Simone, Zim
Ngqawana, Moses Molelekwa, Madala Kunene and many more gifted souls. Forming part of
the band are Sibusiso Malindzisa (keys), Zoe Molelekwa (keys), Lebohang Moleleki (drums),
Miseka Gaqa (vocals), Khutjo Nkwana (alto sax), Muhammad Dawjee (tenor sax),
Athamacwera Ngcaba (trombone) and Nhlanhla Ngqaqu (bass). Forming part of the iPhupho
L’ka Biko family are Pulane Mafatshe (vocals), Sive Mqikela (vocals), Koketso Poho (vocals), Sbu
Mkhize (vocals), Moeketsi Kgotle (vocals), Tshiamo Nkoane (drums), Steve SA (drums), Nkululeko
Khumalo (guitar), Josh Mokoena (piano), Lebohang Lebakeng (piano) and Godfrey Mntambo
(alto sax), Duma Nkabinde (rapper) and many more (iPhupho L’ka Biko is an institution, a
community). In the past years iPhupho L’ka Biko has ventured into collaborations with Makhafula
Vilakazi (poet), Siyabonga Mthembu (vocalist) from The Brother Moves ON, Kinsmen, Hymphatic
Thabs (legendary rapper) and Khaya Mahlangu (legendary saxophonist).
