About Art Battle

Art Battle is a renowned global arts initiative that showcases live competitive painting and has reached over 50 countries worldwide. In partnership with SL8, Art Battle has made its home at Johannesburg's prime arts locale, Victoria Yards, since early 2022 and is preparing for a series in Cape Town and Windhoek.

Art Battle in Soweto

For the first time, Art Battle journeys into the heart of Soweto, teaming up with Right Brain Factory SA at the premier EST1912 Arts and Culture Hub. Artists will rise to the challenge, crafting original artwork live, as they vie for the title of Art Battle Champion.

The Experience

Amidst the creative fervor, enjoy the legendary Peanut Butter Jam Collective's live music – Gontse Makhene (percussions) Vincent Ngubane (keys), Ayanda Zalekile (base guitar) & Kekgorogile Makgatle (drums) , alongside the soul-stirring mixes of DJ Tinonit, DJ Franky, DJ Imamu, and the illustrious DJ Philzz. Savor the culinary delights of Phat Burgers and a diverse selection of beverages to tantalize every taste. There will also be showcases of local products from some of Soweto’s creative community, for that unique last minute Xmas gift.

Join the festivities at EST1912 or tune into the Art Battle International Live Streaming Platform for an interactive experience. Art enthusiasts around the world can witness the spectacle and participate in the live art auction.

Social Impact

This momentous event also serves as a means for social advancement in underprivileged communities. Proceeds from art sales will benefit the Motlalepula Chabaku Foundation, fostering art development programs at EST1912 Arts and Culture Hub. This initiative is supported by the Art Battle international, EST912 Arts and Culture Hub, City of Johannesburg's Art Alive 2023 Program, Art Bank SA PESP4 Internship Program, Relevision Radio, Egoli Distillery and Phat Burger.

WHAT IS ART BATTLE?

Art Battle® is live competitive painting. Painters create the best work they can in 20 minutes. As they work, patrons move around the easels, closely watching the creative process. At the end of the round, the audience votes democratically for their favourite painting and bids in silent auction to take the work home.
