STBB 2KEEP-A-BREAST MTB CHALLENGE Overgaauw Wine Estate

ABOUT

The STBB 2Keep-A-Breast team welcomes you to Overgaauw Wine Estate and the Bottelary Hills Mountain Bike trail network, the best kept Mountain Biking secret in the Western Cape!

Join us on 22 October this year to have fun for a cause close to our hearts – breast cancer.  This event was specifically conceived to support CANSA who tirelessly works to enable cancer research, educate the public and provide support to those affected by cancer.  All proceeds are donated to CANSA and the organisation itself is also present on the day to interact with the public and to do free health screenings and give advice.

Our route designing gurus have hand-picked and created five incredible routes to excite riders of all ages and skill levels.

For children and those new to this wonderful sport, we offer both a 5km and 12km fun ride which will take you on an undulating, fast and not-too-technical route. Out through Overgaauw onto the neighbouring estates, crisscrossing through vineyards, speeding over dam walls and flowing through tree-lined jeep tracks, before returning to Overgaauw.

Looking for more of a challenge? Look no further!  We also have three longer routes, a 30km, a 45km and a 60km of varying difficulty just waiting to be experienced. These three events share much of the same route but differ in amount of single track, climbing and technical challenges.

Warning ahead: The 60km is strictly for the fit and experienced. Riders can expect a mind-blowing variety of single track, created by trail gurus Braam Louw and Adrian Winter, carving its way through vineyards, natural bush, plantations and even over granite slabs! The 360 degree loop around the Renosterveld Conservancy affords riders the opportunity of experiencing the unparalleled views of the Jonkershoek Mountains, False Bay and even the Tafelberg. However, with around 1,600m of vertical ascent, the privilege of such magnificent scenery must be earned! After all, the trail network is not called Bottelary Hills for no reason.

Most of the climbing will be done on fresh legs in the first 10km of the challenge as the route ascends away from Overgaauw and into Bottelary Hills, splitting the racing snakes from the weekend warriors. With a bit of breathing space, competitors will be able to enjoy the next 10km of single-track without any backlogs before being spat out onto a lengthy but fast stretch of vineyard jeep track rising and diving through the various wine estates that make up this award winning conservation area. This jeep track section culminates in the third major climb of the day. Fear not, the toil will be rewarded with an incredible view of the jagged Stellenbosch Mountains and the promise of a seemingly endless stretch of single track. The final 10km will be covered at a rapid rate, powered by the smell of lunch and the promise of a relaxing afternoon enjoying the various food stalls, wine and craft beer. Riders will scream (with delight) out of the hills and back onto Overgaauw Wine Estate.

The 30km and 45km are shorter routes but are certainly not for the faint-hearted. These routes share the first 4km lung-burning-lactic-acid-churning climb from the start into the Bottelary Hills and the last 4km plunge back down to the finish with the 60km riders. In between they split and rejoin the 60km route a number of times as hills and trails are avoided or incorporated to suit riders’ varying strengths and technical abilities. Riders on these two shorter routes will be able to test themselves on some of the earlier, less technical trails before descending away from Zevenwacht along fast jeep tracks and through flowering vineyards. After splitting, so that the 45km riders can tackle an extra climb or two, both routes meet in time for an assault on the final major climb up to the Jonkershoek lookout. Stop, breathe, drink some water from our well stocked refreshment stations and take it all in. Whilst 30km riders follow jeep tracks back to Overgaauw, the 45km joins up with the 60km route one last time, diving down spectacular trails through natural bush and over dam walls before climbing back up to meet the 30km route for the final thrilling descent back to the finish line.

Invite your friends and family to join you at our post-race chill out zone and food market. Imagine Bedouin style tents with comfy bean bags to rest your weary legs, a huge food market with an array of delicious foods (becoming almost as famous as the race itself), craft beers, wine, a bike wash, secure bike park, as well as a jumping castle, arts and crafts to keep the children entertained.

Come on October! We at STBB are looking forward to sharing in your delight as kilometer after kilometer of the Bottelary Hills’ trail secrets are revealed and enjoyed by all!

Kindly see below the wine offers available:

6 bottles of Overgaauw 2015 Sauvignon Blanc
This wine offers a mélange of ‘green’ and subtle tropical aromas of lime zest, green apple, bell pepper and pineapple with a touch of ‘Overgaauw’ minerality. The aromas follow through onto a well-balanced vibrant palate which delivers an elegant refreshing, crisp finish and a lingering after taste.

6 bottles of Overgaauw 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon
The deep velvet colour and intensity draws you into this complex Cabernet Sauvignon of great finesse; with its dark plum core and intriguing layers of roasted spice and cedar wood, a mélange of red and black berry fruit and a full rich balanced palate and lengthy finish. Although accessible, the firm but ripe tannins give it the structure for 7 to 10 years cellaring, when it should reach its full potential
